Research Engineer in Seismology
The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe's most comprehensive geoscience institutions with approximately 300 employees.
Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural sciences and engineering with social sciences. We have research programs in atmospheric, water, and landscape sciences; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology, and tectonics; paleobiology and wind energy. By studying the Earth's history, we understand how the planet has developed and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge. The Swedish National Seismic Network, SNSN (http://www.snsn.se (http://www.snsn.se)), is part of the geophysics program at the Department of Earth Sciences. SNSN operates 69 permanent seismic measurement stations spread across the country from Torneträsk in the north to Veberöd in the south. Local, regional, and global earthquakes are recorded, analyzed, and archived within the operation. In addition to the daily operation of the network, the activities include an information service that supports society in the event of natural disasters, primarily earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. This service is aimed at government authorities, the media, the public, and companies as well as international partners. Furthermore, a significant part of SNSN's activities includes the ongoing development of analysis methods, field maintenance work, international data exchange, and collaboration with other seismic networks in Europe and around the world.
Job Responsibilities
In collaboration with Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), SNSN analyzes seismic data collected with a local seismic network in the final disposal area in Forsmark. The research engineer's work includes maintaining and developing automatic data processing, conducting manual data analysis, and contributing to method development in seismic data analysis. The Forsmark network will be under development in the coming years, both in hardware and software, and the research engineer is expected to contribute to this, which also involves fieldwork in Forsmark. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with SKB and involves meetings with and reporting results to SKB.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a master's degree in seismology, geophysics, physics, or computational science
- Has experience in seismic data analysis
- Is familiar with Linux/UNIX systems
- Has good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
Since SKB uses Swedish as the working language, we would like you to be able to communicate in Swedish within two years. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability such as good problem-solving ability, teamwork skills, and an independent and structured working style.
Desirable/meritorious
It is meritorious if you meet the following:
- Have experience working within a seismic network
- Have worked with the analysis program SeisComP
- Have experience in method development and programming
- Have good knowledge of Swedish
- Have a B driver's license
